The Global Visions Film Festival began 26 years ago as the Edmonton Learners' Centre's "Third World Film Festival." It restructured in 1998, became a non-profit society, and has since operated as the Global Visions Film Festival. The festival has always drawn its strength from energetic community support for its socially relevant documentary programming, and over 75,000 viewers have attended this festival. Canada is well known and received in the film industry for its documentaries. GVFF has carved out a niche in Edmonton by providing access for Canadian and international documentary films that offer quality and relevance.
