Description

Provided with remarkable access to her title character, Yemen based filmmaker Khadija Al-Salami provides a chilling account of life on death row in a Yemeni prison for women. Amina, a mother of three who was married off at 11 years of age, awaits execution after being convicted of murdering her husband. Originally denied access to her subject, the persistent Al-Salami eventually earns Amina's trust, as well as that of the prison's authorities. Using firsthand accounts and dramatic reconstruction, the film chronicles Amina's daily prison life (where inmates live communally with their children), her two escapes, her last-minute reprieves and her persistent efforts to clear her name for a crime she says she did not commit. Amina is a documentary about the legal and societal struggles faced by Arabic women, a moving story of a brave girl who fights to survive in the face of overwhelming odds.
