Description

And you thought Toronto's real estate market was tough! In a St. Petersburg "komunalka" flat, every room belongs to a different owner. At 43 Marat Street, four families share only a kitchen and bathroom, living in shifts and never entering each other's spaces. When one owner decides to sell her room, profiteering agents angle to sell everyone else's too, like it or not. Director Christiane Büchner's observation of one colossal real estate deal unfolds into a hilarious cultural exposé. Complete lack of privacy and cramped quarters leave no room for agreement-or kind words-between neighbours. Add to the edgy atmosphere the questionable good cop/bad cop sales tactics of the agents, and Russia's socialist-capitalist growing pains come into entertaining focus. pereSTROIKA is a witty look at what a little more room and a few less neighbours could do for a city and a soul.
