Global Visions Film Festival and Doc Alberta Present:
The Challenge of Trust, Ethics and Relationships in a World of Evolving Documentary Styles
Moderator: David Christensen
Documentary filmmaking styles are changing. Not long ago the narrative driven essay film predominated the world of non-fiction cinema. But in the last decade prominent commissioning editors in Europe and North America are increasingly looking for character driven stories. And many filmmakers are responding to this exciting shift in approach.
How has this affected the role of the director? Suddenly relationships with characters take on new significance, as a few protagonists begin to occupy much more screen time than the host of experts and witnesses that once populated films. Developing those relationships, creating trust, protocol and ethics have become new touchstones along the often rocky road of production.
DOC Alberta and Global Visions are proud to host a panel with three filmmakers who have taken their cameras into this new world: Rosie Dransfeld (Broke), Dennis Allen (CBQM) and Shazia Javed (Namrata). All of their films reveal an extraordinary willingness to share, and a great sense of trust. How did they create the atmosphere and the relationships that would allow viewers to share in their subject’s lives, even when that sharing could mean revealing a hidden secret?
David Christensen – a documentary filmmaker who knows all about the challenge, and now is the Executive Producer of the NFB North West Centre, will host this engaging panel.
